DATASETS
You
can get most of these freely online, but here are a few georeferenced
datasets -- GIS 'layers' -- of general usefulness for our area. We'll
add others along the way. (Most of these will be compressed -- 'zipped' -- folders containing multiple associated files.
Bennington County roads
(TIGER file; note that this is a folder of several files that have to
be all together to be fully usable; this link is to a 'zipped' folder
including all of them).
Tax map: Ownership parcels for Town of Bennington, from state GIS clearing house
A couple of DEMs for North Bennington area (this is a big file).
jpegs of historical campus land-use maps (1933, war years, 1951, 1961, 1973) and a 'key', in a single zip file (these are NOT georeferenced yet)
scan of 1835 Bennington area map
in jpeg (NOTE that this map will have lots of inaccuracies and you'll
probably find it impossible to get a really tight registration with
modern data-sets -- even so, it can probably be used, with some
subjective judgment calls, to delineate som things...)
Tax parcel map
for Bennigton, 2008; this shows ownership boundaries for entire town of
Bennington; it might be of help in georeferencing, since property lines
are often identifiable with fencerows and such in old photos and are
pretty stable
A few 1942 aerial photos
for N. Bennington and Bennington (can download more from USGS).
These are zipped, but still a BIG FILE. They are more or
less orthorectified, but not georeferenced.
