What is Available Now?

Although the Web has only been active for a few years, the amount of content is already almost unimaginable. The difficulty arises in finding the sites that contain genuinely useful information among the (literally) millions of pages of limited value. This presentation will refer only to those with historical content that might benefit a mathematics class. Most of them are geared to students about 15 years old or more.

The Web is constantly changing, and you should be aware of search facilities that can help you find new sites. There are two types: sites like Yahoo act as a giant table of contents, allowing you to find the best general sources of information. Others like Excite, Infoseek and Altavista behave more like indexes, and are better if you wish to locate a particular site or search for a specific, narrowly defined topic. (Altavista has recently added the useful capability to translate sites to and from five European languages.) The latest Internet directory, by Encyclopedia Britannica, is highly recommended for finding high-quality sites for educational purposes. Its detailed reviews should soon make it the leading educational search engine.
